Walking into the Moorends Comrades Club , the sight of a worn-out dance floor caught my attention immediately. The wood, once vibrant and alive, had faded over time. I want to share that journey with you on how I restored it to its former glory.
Restoration is about more than visuals; it’s about reviving a space filled with memories. A well-kept dance floor can change the vibe of a room, inviting people to gather and celebrate. Here, I’ll guide you through the process I undertook to restore that dance floor, offering practical steps you can apply to your projects.
Assessing the Condition of the Dance Floor
Before starting any restoration, it’s vital to understand the dance floor's current state. Look closely for wear, such as scratches, dents, or discoloration.
In my first inspection, I identified deep scratches that told tales of countless celebrations. There were areas where the finish had worn away, revealing years of different polish and lacquers used underneath. I found that documenting these flaws with notes and photographs helped me devise a thoughtful restoration plan.

Gathering the Right Tools and Materials
With a clear understanding of the floor’s condition, the next step is gathering the right tools and materials for restoration.
Here’s what you will typically need:
Sander: Essential for removing old finish and imperfections. A good floor sander can save time and effort when working on large spaces.
Sandpaper: Different grits are needed for various sanding stages, from coarse to fine.
Wood filler: Necessary for repairing deep scratches or dents.
Finish: Choose a durable finish; water-based polyurethane is popular for its quick drying and low-odor.
Brushes and rollers: For a smooth and even application of the finish.
Investing in high-quality tools significantly improved the results of my restoration project.
Preparing the Dance Floor for Restoration
Preparation is pivotal. Start by clearing the area of furniture and other obstacles.
Once cleared, thoroughly clean the floor to remove dirt and debris.
After cleaning, I began sanding. Starting with 40 coarse-grit sandpaper, I start with 40 to work out he thickness of the wood. Sadly the floor was not solid wood. 40 grit ripped through what turned out to be a vinyl type veneer that had been stained and heavily finished with years of polish and lacquer. I switched to 120 grit and made two passes with the belt sander before going onto the palm sander.

The sanding was not enough, so I added some stripper and scaped a few layers of the finish off. Working in smaller areas I sanded and scaped for the next three days. After some research it became clear that in the 1960s, when this dance floor was believed to have been fitted, was laid as a vinyl type laminate sheet that was polished to a sheen.
Applying the Finish
With the floor prepped and the damage areas filled, it was time for the exciting part: applying the finish!
I opted for a water-based lacquer by Pallmann called x98 for its quick drying time and high durability levels. Using a roller, I applied the finish evenly across the floor, following the wood grain.
After the first coat dried, I lightly sanded the surface again with 180 grit , ensuring a smooth application for the second coat. I repeated this process twice until I reached the desired sheen.

Maintaining Your Restored Dance Floor
Once restored, regular maintenance is essential to keep the floor looking its best.
Consistent cleaning is key. Regularly sweeping or vacuuming removes dirt and debris. For deeper cleaning, use a damp mop with a gentle cleaner suitable for wooden surfaces.
To protect the floor, consider placing mats at entrances to reduce dirt tracked inside.
Bringing Memories Back to Life
Restoring a dance floor is a satisfying project that can rejuvenate any venue.
Through this experience, I learned that with the right tools, patience, and research, you can turn a worn-out space into a lively dance floor.
